Letter: Murdering feral horses is short-sighted

Dear editor, I read S. Gallant's letter last week and although I appreciate what he or she was trying to say, it also needs to be said that murdering an animal should never be a solution.

Re: Horses on Highway 1A letter on Nov. 24

Dear editor,

I read S. Gallant's letter last week and although I appreciate what he or she was trying to say, it also needs to be said that murdering an animal should never be a solution.

A feral horse is a wild animal. It doesn’t belong to anybody and therefore is the responsibility of the province. Feral horses have been around for 500 years and believe it or not, they provide a valuable service to the community in helping to reduce the effects of climate change.

How? Like deer, bison and elk, these feral horses help to offset damage to the permafrost by trampling snow, moving it around, and opening the snow for foraging.

Some solutions to this problem put forward by Gallant would be to fix the area's fences along the highway. Responsibility must be taken, whether it's privately or provincially.

As for the ongoing proliferation of bears, it’s not rocket science to make a bear-proof organic bin. It makes it easy for people to do their part.

These animals were here first and we are the usurpers. We need to make it so that we aren’t killing them. It’s not that hard. Come on, folks.
