Dear editor,
When a problem arises, just kill it. That was the attitude expressed in the recent letter to the editor about feral horses on Highway 1A. Just like the bears recently euthanized in Bragg Creek and Cochrane.
The letter-writer seemed more concerned about their vehicle than the life of a horse, or cattle or dogs.
I drive Highway 1A frequently and will put on my four-way flashers to flag down vehicles to warn them of animals on the roads. I then make calls to Stoney Nakoda Security, RCMP or the local humane society. If you call Stoney Nakoda Security, they will send out a fellow who will address issues of animals on the highway. Stoney Nakoda Security should be the first call as they are close by and can come quickly. And they do. I have had numerous calls with them and they have been very responsive and considerate.
We have a huge increase in population in Cochrane, which has led to more vehicles on Highway 1A, so please drive the speed limits and slow to 65 kilometres an hour when driving around the curvy bends. There are often animals on highway 1A; horses, cattle, dogs and also Indigenous folks who reside nearby there, and could be walking.
If you love to drive fast, please take Highway 1 and stay off Highway 1A. If you can not slow down to enjoy the stupendous beauty of this highway landscape, you may well not be suited there. Highway 1 works best for higher speeds.
Helping an animal in distress will help us all. Kindness and love and especially in these horrific times of global distress- you will be rewarded many fold for showing kindness and love.
