Dear editor,
On the topic of a proposed police force for Alberta, I agree with Mayor Genung’s recent comments in The Eagle regarding his hesitancy to support adding a provincial police force.
Currently, this province has four separate police forces already: the RCMP, Alberta Sheriffs, municipal peace officers and in the case of Alberta's largest cities, local city police departments.
Do we really need another policing body for a province of 4.5 million people? I worry five separate police forces would create overlap and confusion, likely resulting in convictions overturned by lawyers arguing jurisdictional authority.
