Dear editor,
I’m surprised and disappointed with the public skate situation in Cochrane. I’m looking to teach my son, who is now three, how to skate. The Cochrane Arena doesn’t offer public skating while Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre charges $23 as a drop-in fee without a membership. It would cost me $46 dollars to take my whole family there.
Other small-town municipalities have free skating options. Crowfoot Arena in northwest Calgary has public skating available at $2 for kids and $3 for adults. Outdoor rinks are great, but are obviously weather-dependent and not the best place to learn, as hockey players/older kids/adults are usually sharing the same ice.
Why is it I have to drive to Crowfoot Arena in Calgary to teach my son how to skate?
