Bait cars have been deployed everywhere in town by Cochrane RCMP this past month as part of ongoing efforts to lower the rate of property crime, and so far it's shown results. Earlier in September, police nabbed a man who had stolen one of the RCMP's bait cars. When police were notified that the unit was stolen, they began to trace it to a rural location in Rocky View County near Strathmore. The man is set to appear in Strathmore Court on Oct. 2.
“The bait unit was left in a few different locations in and around Cochrane, where we know vehicles are repeatedly stolen from” said Cst. Kary Moore with the Cochrane RCMP detachment.
"Crime reduction units rely on intelligence gathering to identify crime trends, primarily in hotspots, target repeat offenders and disrupt criminal activity in communities across the province."
Cochrane has seen a spike in rural crime in the last few years with car theft taking a prominent role in that. In February this year, 18 cars were reportedly stolen in the span of one week.
