Around 10 a.m. on May 15 Cochrane RCMP received a complaint of a two-vehicle collision near the Ghost Station. Mike Mondar, who runs the gas station, was away at the time but said the occupants of one of the cars had filled up with $50 worth of gas just before the collision and drove off without paying for it. A surveillance clip shows an Audi Q7 turning onto the highway from the gas station without stopping for oncoming traffic. An oncoming car then T-boned the Audi Q7. Joe Cassidy, a supervisor at the Ghost campground nearby, said he heard the crash. "I made a citizen's arrest," Cassidy said, though RCMP did not comment on this detail. "I was walking towards them and there was a person yelling 'stop those two girls' and they ended up jumping into someone's van, just a random person's. He kicked them out and I detained them then they ran off on me." He said both occupants of the Audi Q7 attempted to flee the scene. When RCMP arrived they determined the Audi Q7 was stolen. All occupants from the Audi Q7 vehicle were caught a short time later, uninjured.

The occupant of the oncoming car that was hit is in serious but stable, non-life threatening condition. Not too far from the scene, an RCMP vehicle arriving on scene to attend to the first crash was involved in a rear-end collision after the police vehicle hit a civilian vehicle from behind. "I was beside an officer and a paramedic and I heard a smack and I was like 'someone just crashed.' Then we all walked over to the edge of the road and looked left and sure enough, we could see a black unmarked police dog unit hit a little red car." Savinkoff said there were no injuries involved in the second incident.
