Young performers shared $3,000 in bursaries from Diamond Valley's Beneath the Arch concert series.

Six young people received an award of $500 each to use towards furthering their artistic progress. Funds are commonly used for lessons, equipment or competition fees.

“They are really designed for kids from Grade 4 though 12 who are in the performing arts,” Jim Coyle, director of awards for Beneath the Arch, said of the bursaries. “We are always impressed at the dedication that that the kids put into their performing art.”

One of the recipients this year was Michael Dunbar, a talented musician who plans on using the funds to buying a new violin and keyboard.

"I was excited that I won. Music has always been one of my favourite subjects," said Dunbar.

The six winners were chosen from a total of 18 applicants and all showed exceptional talent combined with a need for financial support.

In addition to Dunbar, this year’s recipients are Ava Friesen, Emma Tatlow, Katalina Leasak, Lily Deloretto and Piper Meechan.

Beneath the Arch is a non-profit society operated primarily by volunteers that presents an annual concert series. The bursaries are primarily funded through 50/50 raffles at the concerts.

Beneath the Arch has seen an increasing number of young people applying for the bursaries in the last few years with a record 25 applicants last year. The society is interested in expanding the program and increasing fundraising initiatives for next year's bursaries.

Coyle added the continued support from the community is making a real difference in the lives of young performing artists.
