Rocky View County holding emergency response drills on May 8

Exercises revolve around responses to tornado damage and will include services like the Red Cross, fire crews, and the RCMP.
Rocky View County council reviewed and approved a service plan to address the 2016 audit.

Rocky View County (RVC) staff, along with staff from Crossfield and Balzac, will be running an emergency exercise on Thursday, May 8 - practicing their response to an incident.

On the morning of May 8, between 8 am - 11 am, there will be a mock drill in front of Plasti-Fab at 718 McCool St, pretending a tornado has ripped through parts of Crossfield.

A scenario involving a tornado that has ripped through an acreage community with animals and families will take place 9:30 to 10:30 at Fox Meadows acreage community in Rocky View County - Hwy 567 and Range Rd 282A just east of Airdrie.

This will involve an evacuation, search and rescue, livestock containment, rapid damage home assessment, and utility disruption with RVC Fire Services, Canada Task Force 2, Calgary Emergency Management Agency, Fortis, RCMP, and RVC Enforcement Teams on site.

At 11 a.m., high school students from Murdoch School will play a role of evacuees being triaged by the red cross at Balzac Hall.

"We are practicing how we would respond to you, our residents, that would be impacted by such a disaster," the Town of Crossfield wrote on their social media page. "There will be a large presence of vehicles and first responders in your area on May 8."

The day is meant to be a fun exercise for various teams to learn emergency response protocols. There is no cause for alarm.
