RVC kicked off "Name the Canada Geese" contest on social media to welcome back a nesting pair which has continued to return to the County Hall in Balzac year after year.

Rocky View County (RVC) has introduced a honker of a contest designed to enlist residents’ assistance in naming a nesting pair of geese that have taken up residence near the County Hall in Balzac.

According to RVC communications manager Candace Denison, the nesting pair return to the area near the municipal hall every year, providing a wonderful opportunity to kick off a “Name the Canada Geese” contest on Facebook last week.

“I guess they enjoy the County’s hospitality,” she told the Rocky View Weekly.

Denison explained the County shared a message 10 days ago reminding any visitors to County Hall to be wary of the geese, as they can be quite aggressive when nesting. She said this sparked several messages to the communications team with funny comments and name suggestions.

“My personal favourite was a question on if the geese had received appropriate permits prior to building their nest,” Denison said.

She said the humorous tone of these social media interactions inspired the contest, which is intended to be a fun way of inspiring community engagement.

“The primary objective behind launching the "Name the Canada Geese" contest was to increase community engagement and foster a sense of connection among our residents,” she explained. “We believe that such initiatives help create a more transparent and accessible municipal government, while also providing a light-hearted opportunity for people to come together and share their creativity.”

Local governments often deal with complex issues and serious debates, but there’s no reason why, Denison argued, the County shouldn’t embrace moments of levity and fun when they present themselves.

“It’s our hope that this contest will remind our residents that while we are focused on addressing priority issues, we also value the importance recognizing the smaller pleasures to be found in Rocky View County life,” she said.

Names suggested so far for the web-footed pair include Goosey and McGooseface, Rocky and Adrian, and Bonnie and Clyde, among others.

To get involved with Rocky View County’s “Name the Canada Geese” contest, county residents are encouraged to leave their suggestions on RVC’s Facebook page.
