Environment Canada has issued a Special Air Quality Statement for Rocky View County near Cochrane. Wildfire smoke is causing or expected to cause poor air quality and reduced visibility.
“Air quality and visibility due to wildfire smoke can fluctuate over short distances and can vary considerably from hour to hour,” reads their statement. “As smoke levels increase, health risks increase. Limit time outdoors. Consider reducing or rescheduling outdoor sports, activities and events.”
Health risks increase as smoke levels rise.
- Limit time outdoors.
- Reduce or reschedule outdoor sports, events and strenuous activities.
- Watch for symptoms such as:
- Eye, nose and throat irritation
- Headaches
- Mild or severe cough
- Wheezing or chest pain
If symptoms become severe, seek medical attention immediately.
Vulnerable populations—including older adults, pregnant people, infants, young children, individuals with chronic illnesses or respiratory conditions, and outdoor workers—should take extra care and avoid prolonged outdoor exposure.
Tips to protect your health:
- Keep windows and doors closed.
- Use a HEPA-certified air cleaner or quality air filters in HVAC systems.
- In case of extreme heat, balance keeping cool with maintaining indoor air quality.
- If you must be outside, wear a NIOSH-certified N95 respirator or equivalent.
- Check in on neighbours and those in your care who may be more vulnerable.
