COCHRANE— Alberta RCMP members have been experiencing a risk of COVID-19 exposure due to the close contact they experience with potentially infected individuals.
Over the last several days, RCMP officers have reported incidents of being coughed on by members of the public who claim to have the COVID-19 virus.
John Ferguson, the assistant commissioner with Alberta RCMP's officer-in-charge of criminal operations, said menacing to transmit the COVID-19 virus is a threat to the wellbeing and health of officers.
If an individual acts on these threats it will be considered an assault.
In Wetaskiwin, Alta. one incident has been recorded and the individual was charged with assault on a police officer and failure to comply with the Public Health Act.
Alberta's RCMP force is fully operational and continues to ensure the safety and security of Albertans. They are reminding the public to adhere to the current public health guidelines to slow the spread of COVID-19.
