For the second time this week, a grid alert was issued by the Alberta Electrical System Operator (AESO).
AESO declared the grid alert at 6:49 a.m. today due to "tight supply," the organization said on X, formerly Twitter.
In an update at about 9:30 a.m., AESO said, "Alberta’s electricity grid continues to be strained. Please conserve where you can."
Grid alerts are issued when the power system is under stress and is preparing to use emergency reserves to meet demand and maintain system reliability, the organization said.
Information on the AESO website says that consumers are asked to reduce their electricity use during grid alerts to help mitigate the possibility of undertaking more serious emergency measures to balance the system, including rotating power outages.
According to Enmax, the AESO issued a province-wide directive that power consumption must be reduced due to an imbalance in supply and demand.
On X, Enmax said a number of communities in Calgary could see power disruptions lasting about 30 minutes.
Over a dozen communities were affected, but by 9:26 a.m., Enmax said power had been restored to all affected customers.
A grid alert was also called by AESO on April 3, due to unexpected generation loss, it said, but it was ended after less than an hour.
