Hands big and small have been busy this week during Rocky View Schools' (RVS) second annual Helping Hands Clean-up in observance of Earth Day.
Students and staff across most schools within the division will beautify their school grounds by collecting garbage around playground areas from April 25 to 29.
“This is a great opportunity for students and staff to build community, show school spirit and take pride in their school facility while observing Earth Day and its message of environmental stewardship,” said RVS superintendent Greg Luterbach in a media release.
Some of the schools participating in Cochrane include Cochrane Christian Academy and Elizabeth Barrett Elementary School. In Airdrie, Nose Creek Elementary School, Cooper's Crossing School, and Bert Church High School will be among those taking part.
Elizabeth Barrett principal Gerry Gaudet said the elementary school is working in partnership with Cochrane High School and Manachaban Middle School to make the tri-school site a little greener throughout the week.
"All of our classes will have the opportunity to go out," he said. "It's great for our little people to make an impact that they can see."
Across the school division, the classes that find the most valuable item and the weirdest and largest items will be awarded food prizes by members of RVS' operations team. A prize will also be given to classes that exhibit the best school spirit.
Members of the school division's staff will also participate by cleaning up the RVS Education Centre in Airdrie.
The inaugural Helping Hands Clean-up was held in April 2021.
