Calling all cowgirls: applications are now open for the 2013 Cochrane Lions Rodeo Royalty.
Women between the ages of 17 and 24 years are eligible to contend for a place on this year’s throne, an opportunity of a lifetime for many young women, according to former princess and committee member Shannon Black.
“There are countless reasons why young women should enter this contest,” said Black, who was crowned Cochrane Lions Rodeo princess for the 2011/2012 season.
“Anyone who enters leaves with confidence, it really helps girls to come out of their shells.”
Qualified contestants will compete in a month-long competition, during which they will be assessed by the committee in four categories: horsemanship, public speaking, personality and appearance.
In addition, Black said the girls will be fielding impromptu questions throughout each leg of the competition.
She hinted for applicants to study up on their general knowledge of Cochrane and the surrounding area, and the sport of rodeo.
To be eligible, women must:
• Be at least 18 years old as of April 2014 of her application submission year, and not over the age of 25 years as of concluding her reign (Nov. 30, 2014).
• Never have been married or living common-law, pregnant, had a child, or pleaded guilty to or found guilty of a criminal offence.
• Be a Canadian citizen.
• Have a valid driver’s licence, which has never been suspended.
