Bragg Creek Performing Arts look to bring in something different

The 34th season of Bragg Creek Performing Arts is set to kick off this fall with a variety of musicians coming from all over Canada.

The 34th season of Bragg Creek Performing Arts is set to kick off this fall with a variety of musicians coming from all over Canada.

Brenda Bone is the president and artistic director of Bragg Creek Performing Arts and has been with the organization for 14 years.

“We tend to have performers that aren't necessarily common in Calgary, so we mix things up, ” said Bone of Bragg Creek Performing Arts' lineup. “We don't just do one genre of music, we do a variety of entertainment. It's a nice experience. ”

The shows are located at the Bragg Creek Community Centre and Bone said each year they have a “wish list ” of artists they would like to have come and play. She added that she is very excited for this year's lineup.

Bone said that they also have a waitlist of artists wanting to perform that is several years long that they are able to take from every now and then.

“We could put on a whole year of shows of people that want to play here, ” said Bone.

Season's tickets for all three concerts are $84 for adults and $78.20 for seniors and will be available right up until Sept. 27 when the season commences.

“They come and see this great concert, and then after you can talk to the artists, get a picture and get their autograph. It is generally a good experience, ” Bone said.

The first artist of the season is internationally-known musician Oscar Lopez who currently lives in Calgary. Lopez has won two Junos and will be releasing a new CD this year, the first one he has released in 10 years. He will be playing with two backing musicians Sept. 27.

The Bergmann Piano Duo - featuring Elizabeth and Marcel Bergmann from Vancouver - will be performing Saturday, Oct. 25. Bone said they are bringing their own two pianos and Marcel will be performing a new concerto that he has written.

Pianist and vocalist Elizabeth Shepherd is the last performer of the season and will be appearing Nov. 22. The Toronto-based performer will be appearing with a quintet of players and will have her latest CD available - The Signal - that was released Sept. 2 of this year.

Bone said that the majority of their audience comes in from Calgary, but the next place they get their main audience from is Cochrane.

She also added that they are looking for volunteers who are willing to work on tasks between concerts and those interested could be contacted through the volunteer page on their site.
