YMCA Calgary announced today that it has withdrawn its proposal to manage Cochrane's SLS Centre.

"After careful reflection and conversations with the Town of Cochrane and Rocky View County, YMCA Calgary and its Board of Directors have chosen to withdraw from the Cochrane Recreation Facility Request for Proposal (RFP) Process," a statement shared with the Cochrane Eagle from the YMCA reads.

"After being invited to participate by the owners, we have navigated the RFP process with great respect for the Town of Cochrane and Rocky View County, respect for their process, and respect for the community’s voice. As we explored this opportunity, we have always been mindful that successful partnerships require shared vision, timing, and trust. At this stage in the process, we recognize that the community has expressed concerns and this is not the right time for a change in facility management."

The statement continues.

“The YMCA Calgary team has immense appreciation for the individuals and groups who have contributed to SLS Centre’s success and care deeply about its success,” wrote Shannon Doram, YMCA Calgary President and CEO. “I extend my thanks to all who have participated in the Town of Cochrane’s public engagement process and shared their passion for the programs and services offered at SLS Centre”.

Doram added that "although it is not the right time for YMCA Calgary to operate Cochrane’s recreation facilities, we acknowledge that there are already many Cochrane and County residents who enjoy YMCA experiences every day as members, staff, volunteer and program participants and we will continue collaborating and partnering with our shared goals in mind."

The move comes after intense backlash from countless community groups and concerned citizens who have voiced their concerns over the vagueness of the proposed plan and were concerned about the possible instability a YMCA takeover of the SLS Centre could pose to their club operations. On Wednesday, hundreds of people attended a meeting at the RancheHouse and overwhelmingly stated their opposition to the YMCA proposal.

This is a developing story with more to come.
