STANDUP PADDLING

Stand-up paddleboarders rejoice! After a summer of cancelled events, including the SUP Cup, the Logjam Downriver Stand-up Paddle Boarding Race is back this year at the Ghost Lake Reservoir. The event takes place on Sept. 12 and will feature 50 women from all across Alberta and British Columbia. The stand-up paddle-boarding enthusiasts will compete in the race for the highly coveted title of Queen of the Valley. Following the event, there will be prizes and an after-party.

TAKING OUT THE TRASH

On Sunday (Aug. 16), the local non-profit organization Lives With Less Plastic held the second garbage clean-up event of the summer. The first event took place in June. Organizers said that they were once again surprised by how much trash was collected. Among the waste was a surprising amount of disposable masks and sanitizing wipes. In total, the group collected more than six bags of waste from The Quarry area in less than an hour. They said that the area between the Cochrane Movie House, and the Cochrane Times, were particularly bad. The Cochrane Movie House kindly disposed of the collected waste on behalf of the organization.

BACK TO SCHOOL WORRIES

The Cochrane Social Recovery Task Force will host a panel to discuss how Cochrane schools and service providers are adapting to the challenges of COVID-19, and their plans to accommodate student’s re-entry into the school system this fall On Tuesday (Aug. 25). The panel also hopes to discuss how to address feelings of fear, stress and anxiety related to the re-entry. The Social Recovery Task Force released a survey in June regarding the community’s feelings around returning to school and indicated that the feedback it received will be addressed during the panel. Panelists include members from Cochrane Addiction and Mental Health Services, Rocky View Schools, the Calgary Catholic School Board, and others.
