Leading up to Remembrance Day, The Ladies Auxiliary Royal Canadian Legion No. 15 will host their annual Poppy-Tea Bake sale on Nov. 4.
The bake sale will run from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., downstairs at the Cochrane Legion. Admission will be $8 per person, and for children there is no set fee, but they instead ask for a donation. The sale will also feature a door prize and a raffle for a prize basket.
Mona Sylvestre, vice-president of the Ladies Auxiliary, said that as a branch of the Cochrane Legion, they aim to support their local Legion whenever possible.
“It could be generally different funds that they may ask for over time, but we’ve always supported them in regards to any of the upgrades, and we for instance, fill the poppies trays and bag refills for the beginning of the poppy campaign, and that’s an annual thing that we do, at the Legions' request.” she said.
For those partaking in the event, tea, coffee, and juice will be served to all attendees. Sylvestre added that baked goods and sandwiches will also be available. As with previous years, the event will also host the 2023 Cochrane Lions Rodeo Queen, Riley Larsen.
“People in previous years seem to show up and enjoy visiting people that they maybe usually don’t see,” she said. “And we don’t limit the time from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., and we certainly look forward to doing it and having people arrive and support us.”
Despite a decline in membership, Sylvestre said they still maintain good support from the community. With last year's event coinciding with a blizzard, she hopes to see good weather so everyone can drop by the Legion for afternoon tea.
“I guess the thank yous would go to the supporters of our Ladies Auxiliary,” Sylvestre said. “Also, it is open to any ladies that would like to join, and we really welcome them, because we are all getting on in age, and it’s very hard to get replacement volunteers.”
