To honour and remember the lives of those who fought to protect the rights and freedoms of all Canadians, Cochrane’s Royal Canadian Legion Branch No.15 will launch their annual 2023 Poppy Campaign later this week, in preparation of Remembrance Day on Nov. 11.
This year's poppy campaign will launch on Oct. 27, starting with the presentation of the first poppy to Mayor Jeff Genung at the The Station on Railway Ave., at 2:30 p.m.
Each year, the poppy serves as a reminder for those who served Canada, in protecting its freedoms for all Canadians. In Calgary and area alone, there are more than 30,000 World War II, Korean War, and Post War veterans and dependents.
Poppy boxes are expected to return throughout the community, with all proceeds dedicated to supporting the Cochrane Legion in caring for veterans and their dependents in need, through medical care, food, and shelter.
In addition, donations will be used to support the local cadet organizations, the 952 WestJet Air Cadets and the 2512 King’s Own Calgary Regiment Army Cadets.
On Remembrance Day, the Legion will be conducting a service at the Town of Cochrane Cenotaph, located beside the legion on 114 5th Ave. West. The service begins at 10:30 a.m. and will be followed by an opportunity to join local veterans in an afternoon of comradeship at the Cochrane Legion.
The Cochrane Legion, Men of Vision, Branch No.15 encourages residents to attend and pay tribute to all those who have served, and those who are still serving Canada.
