The live-action 'How to Train Your Dragon' officially released in theatres on June 13, 2025.

While the mythical Isle of Berk may be out of reach, the Cochrane Public Library is bringing the magic a little closer to home with a special “How to Train Your Dragon Day” on Friday, August 15.

Families are invited to enjoy an afternoon of dragon-themed fun, topped off by a screening of the new 2025 live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon.

“It’s going to be a lovely event,” said Carmen Erison, program and engagement manager at the library. “We love hosting more literary-themed, books-to-movies type of events at the library.”

Based on Cressida Cowell’s beloved 2004 novel, the latest film follows in the footsteps of the hit 2011 animated version, offering a new take on the story that has inspired readers and viewers alike for years.

“The great part about movie adaptations is that they draw new interest to the book series,” said Erison. “Think about Harry Potter—a popular series even before the films, but when the movies came out, it opened the door for a whole new generation of readers.”

The fun begins at 1 p.m., with themed activities for families to dive into the world of dragons. At 2 p.m., the featured film will roll in the Rotary Lounge, with a big screen set up in the heart of the library.

The event will also serve as the grand finale for the library’s summer reading program and take-home reading challenge, with awards and prizes handed out to participants.

“How to Train Your Dragon Day” is free to attend, and while costumes aren’t required, Hiccup-inspired outfits are highly encouraged for those looking to truly channel their inner dragon rider.
