There’s a special moment experienced by every choir—a moment when nervousness melts away, self-doubt fades, and each member surrenders to the music. In that shared vulnerability, a quiet, powerful trust takes over—each singer leaning on the others to carry the performance together.
“That’s what I like to refer to as choir magic,” said Lee Ann DeCoteau, director and founder of Cochrane Sings. “Every choir director knows what I’m talking about, and at the end of the performance, people are always amazed at how well they did personally.”
The community is invited to witness that magic first-hand at Listen to the Music, Cochrane Sings’ season finale concert, set for Friday, May 16 at Bow Valley Baptist Church.
“I’m excited for the audience to see the joy on the faces of our choir members, to hear how amazing they sound, and to feel that energy and joy transfer to them as well,” said DeCoteau.
Founded in 2022, Cochrane Sings is more than a choir—it’s a growing community of people who gather weekly to make music and build meaningful connections. Now with 75 members, ranging in age from 20 to 80, DeCoteau has seen powerful intergenerational friendships blossom.
“There’s such a wonderful exchange—young people bring energy, and older members offer experience,” she said. “That’s the most rewarding part as a director, to see new relationships forming.”
Following last year’s inaugural concert, which drew about 400 guests, the group is aiming even higher this season—with a larger ensemble, more songs, and an entirely homegrown program.
“Last year, some members of my men’s choir from Canmore joined us,” said DeCoteau. “This year, the entire concert is performed solely by Cochrane Sings. That meant more responsibility, but I knew they were up to the challenge.”
Choir members learned 18 songs over the course of the season, rehearsing weekly for two hours. Their repertoire includes popular tunes by Ed Sheeran, Jason Mraz, and The Beatles, with the Doobie Brothers’ “Listen to the Music” opening the show.
“It was a big challenge,” said DeCoteau. “But they’ve proven to themselves they can rise to the occasion—and here we are.”
The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 at the door (cash only). Admission is free for children 12 and under. Tickets are also available online at:
