Cochrane to Launch fixed Transit routes on August 18

Whether commuting to work, visiting the rec centre, or running daily errands, introducing fixed routes will benefit commuters of Cochrane.

Cochrane COLT - on-demand transit - will adopt a hybrid model of fixed routes and on request services.

Getting around Cochrane is about to become more convenient and accessible. Beginning August 18, the Town will introduce fixed-route service on high-demand corridors.

The Town’s current on-request transit system, Cochrane On-Demand Local Transit (COLT), will soon be supported by three new fixed routes:

  • Route 1: Sunset Ridge → Downtown → SLS Centre
  • Route 2: Heritage Hills → Heartland → Downtown → Cochrane Heights → Downtown
  • Route 3: Fireside → SLS Centre → Downtown

These fixed routes are designed to complement the existing on-request service, which will remain in place to ensure transit access for neighbourhoods not yet served by the fixed-route network.

“Our focus is on making transit more convenient, reliable, and responsive to the needs of our residents,” said Matt Knox, Director of Social Development. “This is about more than buses and routes, it’s about improving quality of life, reducing barriers, and connecting people to the places and services that matter most.”

The new system is the result of a 2024 public engagement process, technical assessment, and best-practice research. The proposal was approved by Town Council earlier this year.

Future expansions are already being considered as neighbourhood development continues, with planned growth in Sunset Ridge (north), Heritage Hills (east), Glenbow, Greystone, and Fireside (west).

To celebrate the launch, residents can ride all fixed routes for free between August 18 and September 1. Regular fares will begin on September 2.

The Town also plans to improve accessibility at transit stops, prioritizing upgrades such as new platforms, signage, and shelters based on need. Continuous service evaluation will be informed by rider feedback, performance data, and community needs.
