The regular Town of Cochrane council meeting on April 11 was nothing if not efficient.

Perhaps nothing was the key word.

In fact, it was like driving through a small village on the prairies – if you blink too long, you might miss it.

The total elapsed time of the meeting was eight minutes, 41 seconds, gavel to gavel. (The livestream video shows 9:36 but ‘Assistant to the deputy mayor’ Morgan Nagel, who wielded the gavel on this night, called the meeting to order 55 seconds late).

He needn’t have worried about time.

At all regular Town of Cochrane meetings, the agenda categories are the same. There’s the Call to Order, Adoption of Agenda, Adoption of Previous Minutes, Delegations (there were none on April 11), Bylaws, (there were three), Business (Committee of the Whole meeting times will now be held at 6 p.m. instead of 5:30 p.m.), Finance (there was nothing), Notices of Motion (none), Mayor’s Report (nope), Councillor’s Reports (nada), and finally, Adjournment.

Some of the items were for first reading only, and by regulation, there is no debate at first reading.

Nagel seemed to be enjoying himself as council neared the end of the agenda.

“All right, cruisin’ right along, there’s no Finance? Any Notices of Motion? No? No drama?” he asked.

As he sounded the gavel for adjournment, Nagel announced, “That brings to an end a very brief and efficient meeting.”
