Cochranites bust out their best cookie recipes this weekend

Whether your pleasure is chocolate chip, macadamia nut, or ginger, local bakers will be putting one dozen of their finest treats on the line during a cookie bake-off.

Whether your pleasure is chocolate chip, macadamia nut, or ginger, local bakers will be putting one dozen of their finest treats on the line during a cookie bake-off.

The first annual Cookie Competition, organized by Kitchen Boutique, is set to run June 1 at Legacy Guitar and Coffee House. Judging of the home-baked goodies is set to start at 2 p.m.

“Well, I really like cookies,” Claire Breeze deadpanned when asked about the inaugural contest. “This type of event, it just doesn’t happen in a big city. It’s a reason for the community to come together.”

Breeze, owner of Kitchen Boutique, hopes the contest mirrors the shop’s Gingerbread House Contest. She said the annual event started off small, but each year sees contestants taking their creations to the next level.

About 20 local bakers have signed up to put their best cookies to the test. Three local judges — Tom Powell, from Legacy; Derek Clouthier, editor of the Cochrane Eagle; and councillor Morgan Nagel — will sample the goods, ultimately deciding upon a winner.

“The cookies have to taste good, but they should also stand out,” said Breeze. “With a classic chocolate chip cookie, maybe use rainbow chips — anything to be a little different.”

The bakers of the three top-ranked cookies will win gift baskets full of goodies from Kitchen Boutique. Breeze said the winning cookie will be featured at Legacy Guitar and Coffee House for a limited time following the competition.

In addition to checking out the contest, Cochranites can take advantage of promotions offered by Kitchen Boutique during the competition. Legacy will have their coffee brewing, as well as live entertainment.
