It is with the “breast of intentions” that the 2013 running of the Boob Tour makes its way to Cochrane.
The travelling comedy show will be rolling into the Cochrane Legion on Jan. 25, with the first comedian hitting the stage at 8 p.m. Hosted by Cochrane Relay for Life, proceeds from the evening will be going to the Canadian Cancer Society.
“I really liked their concept on battling cancer with laughter,” said Carol Tapsay, co-chair of the Cochrane Relay for Life. “Statistically speaking, there will probably be people in the audience who have been touched by cancer. A comedy show like this will bring them some laughter.”
And don’t let the Boob Tour moniker fool you — the event is about raising awareness and money for all types of cancer. And it’s not a women-only comedy night, Tapsay reassured; there will be plenty of laughs for both men and women.
Lamont Ferguson, a veteran comic — and a returning one for the tour — will headline the event. A friend and colleague of James Uloth, an Alberta-born comic and Boob Tour creator, Ferguson said he enjoys supporting the cause.
“I’ve been touched by cancer in some way, if not directly,” he said. “The show is about having a laugh and raising money for a good cause… A comedy show is a great way to get people out supporting these events.”
Influenced by the comedy styles of Bill Cosby, George Carlin and Jerry Seinfeld — even opening for Cosby and Carlin earlier in his career — the California-based funny man said he’s known for his outspoken style.
“I’ve been described as cranky,” he said, laughing. “I talk about my family, my relationship and life as I see it.”
Joining Ferguson for the event are comics Eric Steele and Patricia Cochlan.
The touring comedy show aims to help local organizations — like Cochrane Relay for Life — in their fundraising and awareness efforts. Information will be available at the event for the upcoming Relay for Life, to be held June 7 at the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre.
Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at the Cochrane Eagle office, the Cochrane Legion, Embellish Hair and Nails, as well as at the door on Jan. 25.
