In an effort to engage residents, Town of Cochrane councillor Tara McFadden has taken to the web with the creation of her e-newsletter, aptly named Tara’s Council Updates.
“One of the things I believe in when you’re working in government is that better decisions are made when you have better communication with the community,” said McFadden. “Through the updates, I can share highlights of what’s going on and what’s being discussed in council.”
McFadden said she recognized the demand to reach residents on an online forum, with many people now connected by a variety of social media websites.
The first edition of the e-newsletter was posted on Jan. 17, recapping the topics of the Jan. 14 council meeting. Each issue is listed on the webpage concisely, with an occasional interjection of addition information and facts on the subjects.
Her first post listed topics like the Urgent Care Centre, the light signals at James Walker Trail and an update on the rezoning of Heartland Way in the Heartland development.
“It’s more of a blog,” she said. “I can’t go through the council meeting process and not have my own opinions. I’m not a reporter, but I try to be as fact based and open minded as possible.”
The topics are meant to pique the interest of readers, said McFadden. She added that those who wish to further engage on certain issues are welcome to contact her. She can be reached by email at tara.mcfadden @gmail.com or by dialing 403-519-9619.
McFadden’s e-newsletter will be updated following the next council meeting, which is scheduled for Jan. 28.
