Cremona’s appointed official administrator Eric McGhan provided village residents with an update on municipal matters June 10 by way of a written public notice, touching on such topics as the general election and fire services.
McGhan indicated in the notice that he had received several inquiries from villagers about the new bylaw increasing the number of councillors from three to five.
McGhan sought legal counsel from lawyers at the department of Municipal Affairs, and discovered that on nomination day (Sept. 23) there will be openings for one mayor and four councillors, each for a four-year term.
“I did pursue the possibility of amending these bylaws to consider a straight five-member council and select the mayor from within,” McGhan said in the notice, “and was advised that it would have had to be done more than 180 days prior to the election on Oct. 21, which would have been April 24.”
Fire services was another topic of conversation for McGhan of late.
Meeting with the Cremona Fire Authority and Mountain View County to discuss the potential of a revised service agreement, McGhan said talks would continue during June and he would report on any progress once there was a solid proposal.
In the coming days, McGhan indicated he would provide more detail on issues in Cremona, such as Public Works projects, the business community, recruitment of a returning officer for the coming election and the village website.
