A 48-year-old woman is dead as a result of a single vehicle accident on Lochend Road July 21.

Cochrane RCMP, along with fire services and EMS, responded to the scene at about 5:30 a.m. The Toyota Sienna was heading north when it entered the east ditch, rolling several times before finally landing upside down.

The woman, from Cremona, was the lone occupant of the minivan and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity isn’t being released at this time.

“The cause of the collision is still being investigated,” said Cpl. Troy Savinkoff, of the Cochrane detachment. “We are not considering speed or alcohol to be a factor.”

Another motorist reported the accident, but did not see the collision occur.

Savinkoff said the time of the incident has yet to be determined.

Drug bust near Canmore

About $2 million worth of marijuana and ecstasy were uncovered during a routine traffic stop near Canmore July 18.

The van was heading east on Highway 1 when it was pulled over by a Cochrane RCMP traffic officer, who noticed the strong smell of raw marijuana.

A search of the vehicle revealed about 300 pounds of marijuana and three kilograms of ecstasy. An extendable baton was also found in the vehicle.

A media release said that street level sale of the contraband would net more than $2 million.

A 34-year-old Edmonton man, Patrick Mackinnon, has been charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and one count of possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace.

Mackinnon was released on $3,000 cash bail. He’s expected in Canmore Provincial Court July 24.

Break-in at RV dealership

Cochrane RCMP are also in the midst of investigating a break-and-enter that occurred at Field of RV Dreams in the early morning hours of July 21.

Mounties responded to the new and used RV dealer, located at 70 Commercial Court — near Calaway Park — at about 10 a.m. July 21. Savinkoff said the culprit(s) made off with a number of jerseys and two barbecues. Access to the building was gained by smashing the glass of the front door.

An attempted break-in was also reported at Calgary Tractorland, located at 26 Commercial Court — just down the road from the RV dealership.

Savinkoff said there are currently no suspects in mind, although display cases and a piece of cardboard from the dealership have been seized by RCMP and are being assessed for footprints and fingerprints.
