East End noise concerns

As concerns over the impact of the noise from the industrial sector on East End residents continue, stakeholders are trying to work together privately to devise a possible solution.

Some East End residents have informed the Eagle that they wish to provide an opportunity for all stakeholders to come up with possible solutions before talking to media; the stakeholders include businesses from the industrial sector — where the bulk of the noise concerns are stemming from.

“This has been an ongoing issue for a long time,” explained councilor and East End resident Tara McFadden, who shared her concerns at council last week that this be addressed by council in the near future.

“It’s primarily back-up beepers from the industrial area,” said McFadden. “We have tried to work this out for years…it comes down to health and safety versus peace and quiet.”

McFadden said the problem is that not only are the back-up beepers designed to be piercing and loud, echoing throughout many parts of the East End, but that some businesses are running two shifts — where these beepers can be heard through the night.

She said that perhaps bringing stakeholders to the table may shed some light on these businesses looking at alternative solutions to meet health and safety concerns — including lights, flagmen and back-up beepers that use different technologies.

“Businesses and residences need to work this out….being summer, people want to enjoy the outdoors.”
