Family-fun event hosted by mayoral candidate Genung

In an effort to better engage with busy families, mayoral candidate Jeff Genung is facilitating a final opportunity for candidates to connect with constituents.

Families with young children are encouraged to take advantage of the candidate-hosted event at the Cochrane Ranche this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. that will include free bouncy castles, hot dogs, hot chocolate and snacks backed by the warmth of campfires.

“Going door-to-door I heard from people that they couldn’t make a forum and that it’s hard to connect with candidates just through the newspapers and signs,” said Genung.

In knocking on doors in newer communities where many houses are home to busy families with young children, Genung said it’s difficult to catch those voters actually at home – as they are typically working during the day and attending kid’s activities at night.

He put it out to all fellow candidates that anyone who wished to take advantage of this last opportunity to connect with Cochrane voters are welcome to do so, providing they provide payment of $250 for event costs.

Following the event, Genung will provide all participating candidates with a list of expenses and will distribute leftover funds accordingly.

To date, he has received favourable feedback with more than half of the candidates confirming they will be in attendance.

“Getting families together for some fun is the best way to show the spirit of Cochrane,” said candidate Scott Gibson-Craig, a father of two. “It’s something I wish council would continue (doing).”

Vivian Cox, mother of two, thinks it’s a great opportunity to connect with a growing demographic of voters.

“I believe it’s a great opportunity for the residents to meet the candidates in a casual environment,” said Cox. “Forums are essential, unfortunately those with young children are busy in the evenings and cannot attend forums.”

Candidates are permitted to post one sign and a table will be provided for those in the running to put out their election merchandise.

To date, candidates participating in the Saturday event include Ivan Brooker, Miles Chester, Vivian Cox, Dan Cunin, Bella Fallis, Marni Fedeyko, Tara McFadden, Jason Phillips and Alex Reed.
