A Cochrane family is “moved” by all the support they have received in the last week.
As previously reported by the Eagle, eight-year-old Nathan Wagman was the victim of a recent crime when two thieves stole approximately $100 worth of bottles the boy had been saving for summer vacation spending money and a mini skateboard he wanted to purchase.
“It is very moving to realize how wonderful and caring so many people are,” Paul Wagman, Nathan’s father, said in an email.
Since the article, “Thieves nab eight-year-old’s bottles” was published last Thursday, the Eagle has received several emails and phone calls in response with people wanting to help the eight-year old.
“I was saddened and sickened to read that Nathan Wagman’s bottle collection was stolen from the garage,” – one email read.
“It was refreshing to read that Nathan was earning his money for summer vacation and a mini skateboard rather than expecting his parents to come up with it. In my opinion, youth today often know the price of everything and the value of nothing.”
The majority of emails and phone calls were people expressing that they wanted to donate their empty bottle collection, with a few individuals wanting to help with cash donations.
“I’m very sorry to read what happened to Nathan and disappointed to hear the people responsible were from here, it’s rare thankfully,” another email from a long-time Cochrane resident read.
“I’d like to know if there’s anyway my family and I could donate some bottles to help restore what this young man had taken from him, from the money to the piece of mind he deserves.”
All inquiries were forwarded along to the family, who is currently out of town for the next couple of weeks.
“I spoke to Nathan about the response people had and suggested that we accept their kindness and perhaps take some of his ‘share’ of donations and any extra donations and donate the money to a community cause,” Paul said.
Nathan “immediately” wanted to donate his extra donations and cash to the Cochrane & Area Humane Society and will “share” the donations with the shelter once they are back in town.
“What a wonderful response,” Paul exclaimed at the end of the email.
The family would like to thank the community for all of the community support.
