Although pens and paper might not seem like much, school supplies can make a difference in young students’ lives.
Cochrane Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) staff, in partnership with Staples, is collecting donations to purchase supplies and start registration for the Backpack Program from now until September. For its part, Staples will also allow customers to donate with every in-store purchase.
“It provides an opportunity for all children to have a good start to the school year. It evens that playing field when kids start school without their basic supplies and the things that will help them do well it sets them back potentially so this program eliminates that particular challenge for kids,” said Annemarie Tocher, coordinator at the Resource Centre, speaking on the program for 2014 article in the Eagle.
Tocher noted there’s been a 20 to 30 per cent increase in requests for backpacks every year since the program started in 2009.
