First Furry Fun Fest launches in support of local humane society

Pet Valu and Jana Husmann Real Estate launches new summer fundraising celebration at Cochrane Legion on Saturday July 19.

The Cochrane and Area Humane Society (CAHS) is once again the beneficiary of a heartwarming summer fundraiser—this time through an all-new event that promises to become a seasonal favourite.

Local animal advocate and pet mom Jana Husmann is launching a brand-new summer initiative: Furry Fun Fest. The full-fledged family- and pet-friendly festival will feature a larger venue, expanded programming, and a continued commitment to supporting local animal welfare.

Presented by Pet Valu and Jana Husmann Real Estate, Furry Fun Fest is set for Saturday, July 19 at the Cochrane Lions Events Centre, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.

“We have lots of stuff going on that we didn’t have last year,” said Husmann. “Last year, I hosted a smaller patio party—but this is a brand-new event with vendors, activities, and demonstrations. It’s a whole new experience.”

Originally from Europe, Husmann has long supported animal shelters both abroad and in Cochrane. Her passion for animal advocacy led her to initiate seasonal campaigns like the Blanket Drive, which collects pet supplies for CAHS in the fall.

This year’s debut of Furry Fun Fest will take full advantage of the new venue’s capacity, allowing for more visitors and attractions than ever before.

“We needed more space, especially with all the demonstrations and entertainment we have lined up,” she noted.

The 2025 celebration will feature a wide array of collaborative programming and crowd-pleasing attractions, including:

  • Agility demonstrations by Happy Dogz Cochrane
  • K-9 training exhibits by K-9 Force
  • Corgi races by Calgary Corgi Racers
  • A pie-eating contest
  • A best-dressed pet competition

“People can come to watch, or participate by signing up on our website,” said Husmann. “It’s going to be so much fun.”

The event aims to raise a minimum of $5,000 for the Cochrane and Area Humane Society, exceeding last year’s $3,600 fundraising total from separate initiatives. Donations will be accepted online and at the event.

“I was overwhelmed with the community’s support last year,” Husmann said. “This year, with the new format and venue, I hope to see even more families enjoying the day and helping support a cause that means so much to all of us.”
