A 29-year-old Cochrane man has pleaded guilty to four counts of criminal negligence causing death and one to criminal negligence causing bodily harm following a March 4 head-on collision on Highway 2.
Tyler James Stevens, a former Cochrane resident who recently relocated to Innisfail, was travelling northbound in the southbound lane of the QEII Highway near Innisfail when his Range Rover struck an oncoming vehicle carrying five temporary Filipino workers from Edmonton; four of which where killed and one injured. Police have indicated that alcohol could have been a factor in the collision.
Stevens was originally charged with four counts each for impaired driving causing death, failing to provide a breath sample, criminal negligence in the operation of a motor vehicle causing death, one count each for impaired driving causing bodily harm and criminal negligence in operation of a vehicle causing bodily harm.
He still faces impaired driving charges.
The victims of the crash include two 35-year-old men and two women aged 39 and 52. A 28-year-old woman was injured. Stevens is set to appear in Red Deer provincial court in January for sentencing.
