Highway 66 has been re-opened and campers from Easter Seals Camp Horizon have returned to their cabins following a suspected gas leak in Kananaskis Country July 12.
Campers were being evacuated from the special needs camp and the Gooseberry Provincial Campground after an area visitor reported the smell of gas in the air.
Cochrane RCMP closed Highway 66, in the area of Highway 758, in response to the suspected leak of hazardous material.
Emergency personnel responded quickly, soon establishing that the leak was of natural gas.
The warning was lifted a few hours later.
“It was soon discovered that the gas smell came from a large 3,000-lb propane tank that was in the river as a result of the flood,” stated Alberta RCMP in a media release.
“Emergency personnel determined the situation to be safe, Highway 66 was re-opened and the campers allowed back in the camps. Emergency personnel on scene are currently salvaging the propane tank.”
