The four-day preliminary hearing to decide if a Morley man will stand trial in the death of a 10-year-old girl began on Jan. 7.

Fergus Matthew Hunter, 19, is facing charges including hit-and-run where injury or death occurred as well as dangerous driving causing death in the May 3, 2012 collision that resulted in the death of Morley girl Eleasha Wesley.

Hunter was arrested 20 days after the crash, which occurred in Calgary on the Trans-Canada Highway near Canada Olympic Park.

He has been in custody since his arrest.

The young girl was killed when her family’s Morley-bound car was struck from behind.

The girl, who wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle as it rolled into the ditch.

The hearing is scheduled to span four days to determine whether there is enough evidence to present to a jury.

If convicted, Hunter would face a 14-year maximum sentence.
