Heroes take to the sky

This weekend, a couple of Redwood Meadows Emergency Services (RMES) firefighters will be roughing it atop a building in Bragg Creek — all in support of raising awareness for volunteer fire services.

The yearly event, dubbed Heroes in the Sky, runs nationwide and will make its way to Bragg Creek Sept. 14-15. RMES volunteer firefighters will climb to the top of Bragg Creek Family Foods around noontime on Saturday, remaining there until about 6 p.m. Sunday.

The event will serve as the launch for the 2014 calendar campaign.

Below them, the parking lot will be bustling with activities for local residents and visitors to the hamlet, said Gary Robertson of RMES. Both days of the event will boast of roster of live music acts — from country girl Tanya Ryan and cover band Blueprint, to Rick Godderis. At about 8:15 p.m. Sept. 14, Lauren Mayell will hit the stage as the opening act for Skuzzy and the Woodticks.

With a barbecue, raffles, miniature donkey petting zoo and fire trucks on display — Robertson said the event aims to appeal to families and visitors of all ages.

It all starts again bright and early Sunday morning with a pancake breakfast and a 9:30 a.m. yoga session hosted by Yoga Within the Heart of Bragg Creek. Once everyone is feeling limber, they can take on the rest of the day’s festivities, which include all of the family-friendly fun from the previous day.

This year’s Heroes in the Sky is two fold, explained Robertson. In addition to raising awareness to volunteer fire services and the annual calendar, the event will be running a business expo in conjunction with the 30-hour rooftop camping extravaganza.

“There are local businesses who are still struggling a bit (since the flood),” he remarked. “To help them, part of the idea was to bring people back out to Bragg Creek.”

Last year, this event sold about 150 calendars. This year, 250 calendars have been ordered, said Robertson. He’s hoping to sell them all.

“All of the money raised will be staying local — specifically for our department,” he added.

Heroes in the Sky will be set up in the northwest corner of the mall parking lot in Bragg Creek.
