Cochrane RCMP are investigating the death of a Stoney Nakoda First Nation man.

On Jan. 22 at approximately 5:25 a.m., local RCMP were dispatched to assist Emergency Medical Services (EMS) at a residence in Morley, where a man was reportedly in medical distress.

Wilfred Junior Amos, 28, of Stoney Nakoda First Nation was pronounced dead on the scene. Another male was in the house and arrested on charges not related to the incident, and has since been released from custody.

RCMP Major Crimes Unit (MCU) has taken charge of the investigation and is being assisted by the RCMP Forensic Investigation Section (FIS) and the Cochrane RCMP. An autopsy has been scheduled for Jan. 25 and the investigation is on-going.

There was a collision on Highway 1A, between a sport-utility vehicle (SUV) and a horse on Jan. 22, shortly after 11 p.m., approximately two kilometres west of Ghost River Dam. Cochrane and Nakoda EMS responded to the accident.

There was substantial damage to the front end of the SUV, although no one in the vehicle required extrication.

All three people from the SUV were transported to Foothills Hospital in Calgary. The female driver and front passenger, a man in his late-20s, were transported in serious but stable and non-life threatening condition. The passenger in the back, a woman in her mid-30s, was transported in stable condition.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor and the investigation is on-going.
