Calgary’s Bill Phipps, the former United Church of Canada moderator, will be presenting his views on human beings and the earth during a talk to the Cochrane Ideas group June 14.

Phipps will be touching on issues of spirituality, morality and ethics, as well as economics, all under the umbrella topic of: Is there still hope; the Spirituality of Climate Change and the Economy.

The topic follows up on Phipps 2007 book, Cause for Hope, which tackles controversial ideas such as economical destruction, economic disparity, mistreatment of non-white cultures and consumerism.

According to a media release, Phipps wants to show the connection between these issues. He stated that many of these cases, the lack of government leadership at provincial and federal levels is a critical failure.

Phipps, 71, has been a popular and controversial figure through much of his life. Before serving as leader of Canada’s United Church in 1997-2000, he served as a poverty lawyer, community organizer and pastor in Toronto and Calgary.

He retired from Scarborough United Church in Calgary in 2007.

He continues to keep busy supporting many causes and makes many public presentations and travels throughout the world. He has participated in picketing and fasts.

The presentation is set to begin at 7 p.m. at St. Andrew’s United Church of Cochrane. Admission is free, but donations are welcomed.

Cochrane Ideas, now 13 years old, meets once a month to share and learn about a variety of topics.
