A new hospital for larger scale companions is set for a grand opening this weekend, and horse owners can get a glimpse of first-of-its-kind technology in Western Canada. Burwash Equine Services, a hospital and reproduction centre for horses, has been around since the 70s, but this past summer it just moved into a new, larger location just south of the Fireside community. Co-owner Kirby Penttila said the new facility – worth roughly $2 million – features a unique curved monorail hoist system, which she said provides horses a smoother ride in and out of surgeries. “Our new equine veterinary hospital was designed to push industry standards for horse health care to new levels,” Penttila said. The device is also the first of its kind in Western Canada. Pentila said the hospital also features an assisted recovery room hoped to improve the horses’ recovery after surgery as well as a client surgery viewing area, which are both also the first of their kind in the province. “Burwash Equine Services has been part of the fabric of the horse industry in Alberta since 1977. We have long since outgrown our previous clinical facilities and are thrilled to have moved into our new state-of-the art building this summer,” she said. “Dr. Wayne Burwash started the practice in 1977 and became known for the compassionate care he provided to his patients and the trustworthy relationships he built with his clients.” Pentila said after purchasing the practice from Burwash in 2013, she became committed to upholding his traditions while making plans to move to the new clinic. A grand opening will be held next weekend on Sept. 29 from 12 to 3 p.m. which will include a barbecue lunch and family friendly activities. The new Burwash Equine Services is located at 252140 Range Road 42. It can be found south of the Fireside community on Highway 22.
