It took some reflection after falling just 78 votes short in 2021, but Cochranite Paul Singh has officially decided to run again for Town Council in the upcoming 2025 municipal election.
Originally from India, Singh moved to Canada in 2011 and completed his studies at Humber College in Toronto. He relocated to Cochrane in 2014, drawn by the town’s scenic beauty and sense of community.
“That view from Gleneagles Hill-- it felt like home,” he said.
Singh, a full-time realtor and mortgage associate, quickly got involved in community life. His volunteer work began with BGC Cochrane and Area and has since expanded to groups like Cochrane Activettes, Community Futures Centre West and the Cochrane Immigrant Services Committee.
“Volunteering was the best way for me to learn from others and be part of the community,” he said.
That spirit of service led him to run in the 2021 municipal election. Although he narrowly missed a seat, Singh says the experience affirmed his commitment to local politics.
“I believe in the power of a connected and engaged community. I want everyone to feel heard, valued and included.”
Singh formally announced his 2025 candidacy on June 9 at a small event with friends and family. He has launched his campaign website, highlighting three main pillars of his platform:
- Supporting local businesses
- Inclusion for all residents
- Building strong community partnerships
Singh believes his years of volunteering and close work with diverse groups give him a unique perspective to bring to council.
“Whether it’s improving services, strengthening neighbourhoods, or governing more effectively-- I want to listen,” he said. “I’ve heard so many voices through my work with different organizations, and I want to carry those voices into the council chambers.”
