Cue sticks were raised for a cause this past weekend as local pool player Billy Gibbons hosted an eight-ball tournament at The Venue Music & Sportsbar & Grill to help raise funds for Brielle Thomson’s Trexo Robotics Exoskeleton.
“I think this event was a success,” said Gibbons. “Win or lose, it’s a good fundraiser because the money is all going to Brielle.”
Held in a single-game, double-elimination format, the tournament exceeded expectations with more than the planned 24 participants showing up for the cause.
“We could’ve had 64 players as far as I’m concerned,” said Gibbons. “We only had three tables to run the tournament, so unfortunately we had to cap it at 24.”
Despite the limitation, the room was packed with players eager to contribute. Jeremy Labelle emerged victorious on the A-side, while Tason House claimed the B-side title.
Gibbons donated a Meucci cue for the A-side winner, and a second cue was generously contributed by Dragan Balac for the B-side champ.
In total, the event raised $600 toward Brielle’s mobility device.
“It may not be as big a contribution as what we need, but it’s a kick in the can,” said Gibbons. “It recognizes the pool community, which is also out to help others—just like any other group would.”
