A string of apparent attacks on Alberta politicians have surfaced as of late, and Wild Rose MP Blake Richards did not sit in silence on the sidelines.
Following comments made by Liberal energy critic David McGuinty, where he said Alberta MPs ‘should go home’ if they don’t take a nationwide view of energy policies, Richards stood following question period on Nov. 21 calling for McGuinty to step down from his post; which the Liberal MP did later that same day.
“The comments are simply outrageous,” Richards said. “The Liberals fail to acknowledge that Alberta’s energy industry is creating jobs and prosperity right across this country. My constituents remember all too well Pierre Trudeau’s failed National Energy Program that devastated the economy and cost Albertans billions of dollars.”
Justin Trudeau, son of the former Prime Minister and Liberal leadership candidate, also had to apologize for comments he made about Albertans, saying the country has struggled because Alberta politicians have ‘controlled the agenda.’ He also said the best Prime Ministers during the 20th Century have all come from Quebec.
Some believed his comments would have an effect on the results of Monday’s Calgary-Centre byelection, where many thought Liberal candidate Harvey Locke had a good chance of winning the Tory stronghold.
Conservative Joan Crockatt emerged the victor by a narrow margin.
