It is now illegal in Canada to conceal one’s identity by wearing a mask or other form of disguise while participating in an unlawful public gathering or assembly.

Wild Rose MP Blake Richards’ private members bill — the Concealment of Identity Act — amends Canada’s Criminal Code, allowing law enforcement to arrest those who are present during a riot and concealing their identity.

“It’s truly an honour to serve Canadians this way,” said Richards. “This moment is the culmination of over two years of study and consultation, not only with police officers, but with victims of riots and business stakeholders in our largest cities. So many contributed their thoughts and support to my bill at its different stages of work; we can all rest easier tonight knowing our communities have been made safer with its passage.”

Bill C-309 received Royal Assent June 19 by the Governor General of Canada in a ceremony on the Senate floor.
