Cochrane’s historic River Avenue Bridge will close to regular vehicle traffic in July 2025, transitioning into a dedicated pedestrian and active transportation corridor.

The change is part of a broader infrastructure update prompted by the Town of Cochrane’s request for the developer to upgrade the existing gravel Emergency Access Road to a formal roadway. This upgrade will enable both emergency and regular vehicles to fully access properties on River Heights Rise via Riviera Way.

“Ensuring reliable emergency access to all properties south of the river was the main motivation for this change,” said Drew Hyndman, Executive Director of Development and Infrastructure Services for the Town of Cochrane. “Working with the developer in the area provided the opportunity to also create a safer space to navigate the pathway network, reduce wear and tear on the bridge, and support future community uses.”

While vehicle access will be restricted, the River Avenue Bridge will remain open to pedestrians, cyclists, e-scooter users, and emergency and maintenance vehicles through a secure, controlled gate system.

Previously, the bridge served as the sole access route for several properties along River Heights Rise. However, its narrow width and weight limitations created challenges, especially for larger emergency vehicles.

The update is intended to balance the community’s evolving transportation needs with long-term safety and infrastructure goals.
