The Cochrane & Area Humane Society is seeking a new transport vehicle after a non-fatal accident last week.
A volunteer was driving the shelter’s van as part of the rural rescue and support program when she was involved in a single vehicle collision where the van rolled multiple times.
“The trailer and van will be a write-off,” explained Jaimie Anton, the shelter’s fund development officer.
“We are very grateful our volunteer will recover and very grateful there were not any animals in the vehicle.”
The development officer explained that the staff uses the shelter’s van on a daily basis for transporting animals, outreach programs or for daily vet visits.
“We are now looking to replace the van with a cargo style van that will allow us to transport animals,” Anton said.
An anonymous donor has offered to match donations up to $12,500. Staff members are also reaching out to dealerships for assistance.
“Right now we don’t have a shelter vehicle,” Anton said.
The accident happened right in the middle of the shelter’s fundraising campaign for the new Rehabilitation and Education Centre. The 4,000-square-foot-building behind the current shelter has the walls and framing up and is “on-track” with more than 83 per cent of the $850,000 goal already raised.
“So far we are on schedule to have it done by the end of the year,” Anton explained.
