Trevor Mansell, 18, is one Springbank Community High School grad of 2014 who is setting on a musical journey experienced by few at his age.

The young oboist (performer and writer) has been invited to study under Joe Robinson in Boca Raton, Fla., at Lynn University, starting later this summer. Robinson was the principal oboist for the New York Philharmonic for 27 years and has long been considered among the top of his class — a popular teacher, keynote speaker, publicist and fundraiser.

The honour is a rare one and for Mansell, it could pave the way for a future with a prestigious professional orchestra.

“I like the repertoire for it and the really pure sound of it,” said Mansell on his decision to switch from bass clarinet to oboe nearly five years ago — mastering the challenging double-reed instrument.

Mansell met Robinson at the Mount Royal Conservatory’s elite advanced performance program, where he is enrolled and is a top student.
