The Cochrane and Area Events Society (CAES) announced last week that they will be welcoming a special guest at the 2013 ATCO Gas Cochrane WinterFest this Jan. 26 — the Calgary Stampede Indian Princess, Amber Big Plume.

Keeping mindful of the importance in involving not only Cochrane schools in the annual event, but also the kids at Morley’s Nakoda Elementary School, CAES has decided to put together a colouring contest for Kindergarten and Grade 1 students.

The top four winners will escort Big Plume to WinterFest.

“People getting together to share an enjoyable experience — that's how you make friends and build community,” said CAES director, Brooks Tower, adding that the Calgary Stampede & Exhibition has been very hospitable to deal with.

“That's why we're partnering with the Morley Elementary School, to make the Stampede Indian Princess's visit even more special.”

The Indian Princess is a role model for First Nations and other youth, elected by the Calgary Stampede Indian Events committee from one of the five Treaty 7 tribes each year — Tsuu Tíina, Piikani, Stoney, Kainai and Siksika First Nations; along with representing the Treaty 7 tribes, it’s also the job of the elected princess to represent the Stampede Indian Village and Calgary’s western hospitality and traditions, alongside her fellow Stampede Royalty.

“Right from day one we have focused on creating an interest in Morley for our events… It’s all coming together and it’s exciting,” said Tower.

WinterFest is an annual family festival, complete with bright lights and décor, games, live entertainment and food, hosted at the Lions Rodeo Park and involving the participation and sponsorships of numerous area businesses, non-profit organizations and volunteers.
