Neighbours informed residents of 195 Sunterra Ridge Place of a fire at their home June 1, after smoke was seen rising from the garage. Upon arrival, Cochrane Fire Services began battling the thick smoke and flames for over an hour. It is believed that a stove could have been the cause of the blaze; the home is still intact.

A stove is to blame for a garage fire in the community of Sunterra, according to fire investigators.

Cochrane Fire Services were met with thick smoke when they responded to 195 Sunterra Ridge Place at about 11 a.m. June 1. With the garage ablaze, the fire crew quickly got to work.

“Firefighters got to the scene fast, which was key,” commented Jeff Avery, Cochrane Fire lieutenant and investigator. “The garage ended up being a write-off, but firefighters were able to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to the rest of the house.”

Avery said the cause was tracked down to a stove, piled with boxes, that accidently got turned on.

In an effort to clear the smoke — and gain visibility — firefighters took down the garage door and cut a hole in the roof of the home.

The occupants of the home were unharmed, he said.

A neighbour, who called 911, noticed the smoke.
