Workers continue to plug away at the Jack Tennant Memorial Bridge which will connect the north and south sides of Cochrane. The bridge will act as another artery to relieve some traffic in communities such as Riviera, Riversong and The Willows.
As of Saturday (Sept. 14) the gravel berm had been removed from the river, one day earlier than anticipated. This was in accordance with a restricted activity period where in-stream work must be avoided to prevent impacts to fish during sensitive life stages.
Jason Whitney, Superintendent with PCL, says the beach has been regraded but will remain closed for a couple more weeks while they do a few more things to make it safe for the public.
"I'll have both sides of the pathway closed, but once you get outside the site you can go around and then go under the bridge," explains Whitney.
Concrete has been poured and and the bridge has been deemed safe to walk on. Ashphalt and water proofing will be happening in the coming year. Next on the agenda will be pouring concrete barriers and approach slabs as well as installing steel railings.
The proposed list of work will continue until late October, early November, before it will be put on hold through the winter months.
The 160 m bridge will be turned over to the town in the summer of next year and open to traffic by fall of next year.
